The Lovers

Key words: Love, harmony, union

The Lovers

Image: Adam and Eve stand naked in front of the tree of life and the tree of forbidden fruit, representing vulnerability. The Archangel Raphael appears above them.

The Lovers can have many interpretations in a reading. If you are looking for love, it can suggest a partner is not far away. If you are in a relationship, it can represent a deeper commitment. It can also represent a passion or love for a new project. I often see this as a card representing close family issues.

This card is always influenced by the cards that surround it. If you are in a long-term relationship, there may be a change of dynamics and the surrounding cards will decipher whether this is for better or worse. For example, if the lovers appear next to the Sun card, it would suggest news of an engagement or marriage. But if it appears next to the Moon card, it may suggest deceit or betrayal.

The Lovers’ energy can be passionate and joyful. On the negative side, it can represent a third person within the relationship. This is not to suggest that it is always deceitful – instead it may relate to someone who is overly demanding, and therefore distracting you from what is important right now. Be careful not to neglect those who need your love and attention most. Do not allow resentment of another person to overshadow all that is good in your life at this time.

You may be looking at a relationship in a different light, either searching for greater commitment or possibly to release yourself from restrictions you may be feeling. This card suggests it is time to think about your choices and make decisions for your long-term emotional wellbeing.

In some Tarot decks the Archangel Raphael is prominently featured in the Lovers card between the man and the woman (Adam and Eve). As the Archangel of love and healing, his message is to remind you to take care and to learn to love yourself. If your relationship has experienced a rough patch and needs extra attention at this time, you can call upon Raphael for guidance. He will also bring into your life the strength of healing and support.

Ultimately, the Lovers is a card of commitment, love and bonding.

Reversed: Separation, disharmony

Affirmation: ‘I welcome new people into my life and attract those who are right for me.’
